布莱恩•蒂尔尼（Brian Tierney），1922年生，中世纪史名家。英国剑桥大学博士，先后任教美国天主教大学和康奈尔大学，曾任天主教历史学会主席，荣获中世纪研究哈斯金斯奖章、康奈尔大学Johannes Quasten杰出贡献奖。蒂尔尼尤其擅长教会史研究，有多部名作问世，近作为《自然权利的观念》。 西德尼•佩因特（Sidney Painter，1902－1960），中世纪史名家。美国耶鲁大学博士，先后执教耶鲁大学、约翰霍普金斯大学。佩因特专长12世纪欧洲历史，尤其是英格兰的政治社会史，留有多部中世纪史研究名著。 1953年佩因特出版《中世纪史》一书，广受赞誉。在佩因特过世后，蒂尔尼加以补充和改写，1970年出版《西欧中世纪史》，之后不断增补、修订，至今一直是西方学术界最受重视的中世纪通史。
